What Is Lyme Disease?
Lyme disease is a complex, multi-system illness caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. It is most commonly transmitted by the bite of an infected black-legged tick, but there may be additional methods of transmission, including mother-to-fetus transmission. Lyme disease is difficult to diagnose and often complicated by co-infections and co-existing illnesses, making it one of the most misdiagnosed immune disorders.
According to the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS), 43 states in the United States are home to black-legged ticks. Black-legged ticks are also found throughout South America, Europe, northern Asia, and northern Africa. More than 300,000 new cases of Lyme disease are estimated to occur each year in the United States alone. Symptoms are wide-ranging and can include chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or IBS, joint pain, neurological symptoms such as numbness, tingling, headaches, and memory issues, as well as psycho-emotional symptoms such as mood swings, irritability, anxiety, and depression. Lyme disease can also affect hormone function, leading to weight changes, hair loss, and reproductive issues. Although the target-shaped erythema migrans (EM) rash is considered classic to Lyme disease, it is only reported in about 9% of cases, and the absence of the rash does not rule out Lyme disease. Furthermore, at least 30% of adults living in the U.S. with Lyme disease never recall a tick bite.
Because of this wide range of clinical presentations for Lyme and associated co-infections, it can be challenging to get a proper diagnosis. Delays in diagnosis contribute to the development of late-stage Lyme disease and its complications, including autoimmune disorders, dementia, and chronic immune dysregulation. This often leaves patients debilitated and deeply frustrated.
At BioReset Medical, our team of doctors is trained to recognize acute and late-stage Lyme disease, prevent further decline, and provide a path forward that is both comprehensive and personalized.
What are Mold & Mycotoxins?

Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by mold, and chronic exposure to them can cause serious harm to your health. Although mold toxicity is believed to be very prevalent, it is significantly underdiagnosed because the symptoms of exposure are wide-ranging and diverse. Exposure can cause many issues within the body, such as fatigue, anxiety, digestive problems, respiratory issues, immune dysregulation, and neurological impairment. At BioReset Medical, a practitioner will take a detailed history of your symptoms and conduct several tests to confirm whether mycotoxins are present. If they are, there are several protocols our practitioners may use to address their effects.
The primary source of mold toxicity for most people comes from inhaling mold spores. Mycotoxins can enter the body by inhalation, touch, eating contaminated food. Most significantly, though, they are continually released inside the body by mold that has formed colonies, usually in the sinuses and intestines. Once colonized, mold produces biofilms, a gelatinous, mucus-like layer containing bacteria, fungi, and mold - similar to what naturally forms at the edge of a pond. The biofilm provides the mold with a protective environment, inaccessible to the immune system, allowing it to continue to thrive, and release mycotoxins long after the environmental exposure is gone.
Mold in and of itself is not a mycotoxin. Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by mold as a protective mechanism. Not all types of mold produce mycotoxins, but those that do can make many different mycotoxins. Think about a slice of bread that is beginning to get moldy. You’ll often notice a green fuzzy substance on the bread. That green substance is secreting tiny nanoparticles of mycotoxins.
While mycotoxins are released to help ensure the mold's survival, they often end up in a person's bloodstream due to the colony's proximity to the blood vessels within the nose and the intestines. Once the mycotoxins are loose in the bloodstream, the immune system attempts to deal with them, but this can cause significant inflammation as well as immune dysregulation.
The symptoms of mold toxicity and biotoxin illness are wide-ranging. Experiencing chronic sinus or respiratory issues, digestive problems, fatigue, or brain fog may indicate that a patient should get tested for mold and mycotoxin exposure. At BioReset Medical, we utilize several tests to check for mold and mycotoxin exposure, including urine, antibody, and nasal swab. If we discover a patient is suffering from mold and mycotoxin exposure, we will work to eradicate the biofilm to eliminate the mold's protection and stop the production of mycotoxins. Additionally, we will have patients investigate their environment because removing the exposure is crucial to healing.
